  2. absolute FIRE by CR North today. i'm honestly not sure if DT West went all out, because i'm frankly quite surprised with their score. i suspect we will see them race much better at the state meet, but that being said, CRN is looking really, really good. One two other teams have had 5 runners at 16:00 or faster at district 1 champs and that was Coatesville (2006) and WC Henderson 2013.

    3) Ryan Campbell 15:33
    7) Tim Haas 15:41
    9) Bryan Keller 15:43
    13) Sam Earley 15:47
    21) Ethan Koza 16:00
    41) Kevin Ehrgott 16:19

this is what happens when 6 runners on CR North's team this year have a good day. i think Lehigh's course plays particularly well to Keller and Koza's speed, so I think next week the two of them may struggle a bit more. This being said Haas' consistency is impressive and we'll have to see how district 3 plays out.

    an extremely excited,
    ForrestCRN

  3. Some people are going to feel real silly for bagging on Forrest earlier in the season. CRN just showed that they could contend for the state title. Biased or not, Forrest knew what he was talking about.

    1. To be fair he picked against them like 3 days ago for this very meet, but in general yes

      Delete
    2. CRN almost shut out DTW. How did he miss so badly on CRN and pick DTW over them?

      Delete
    3. DTW never runs well at Lehigh, and even given that, they still had a bad day. I don't think they'll catch CRN at states, but it'll certainly be closer

      Delete
    4. It's possible for a team to have a bad day now and again, but I have never heard of a team that "never runs well at Lehigh".

    5. hehe, i wanted to be extra conservative on CR North at the district meet. wasn't going to jinx the team. i thought at best they would score 65 points, because lehigh is fast and it makes the course perfect for runners like bryan keller and ethan koza. i think the slightly less hills at hershey will benefit this squad as well, especially if they go out smart between 4:55-5:00.

      Delete
  4. If CRN can run hills they should win. DTW should be dangerous too.

  5. Every October what can we count on? Leaves falling from the trees, brown corn fields being cut down, annoying political ads all over TV/radio and WCH-XC getting through to states. I really should have known better when making my predictions. But when looking for my 5th team I was feeling an underdog might come through and I don’t care if WCH is running 7 freshmen, they’re never an underdog. But I just didn’t think they had enough this year so I left them out. I figured with all those teams that had a shot at top 5 the one who’s 4-5 had a big drop would be the difference. It looks like WCH’s 2-5 all came up big and of course Smucker did also with a 4th place finish.

My cinderella pick Rustin didn’t have the day I thought they could but they still had a nice season. CRN really killed it. I knew they were good and I picked them to win, but not by that big of a margin. Carslile should be concerned.

I did have CRN, DTW, CBW and LM in the right order so I can’t complain about the prediction but I’m going to anyway because I should have known better about WCH!!!!

    1. Bill, Bill, Bill. Yes you of all people as close as you are to the situation should have known. Congrats on your Sophmore athete making it through to state. Next year baring injuries your team should be a contender.

      Delete
    2. Bill???? Not likely. Who has the knowledge to correctly pick CRN, Dwest, CBW and LM (who were 20th at the mile) in the right order, and then picks Rustin? Why Rustin? We haven’t heard from the RJL guy most of season and all of the sudden the night before districts he picks another WC school? And then he gives the reasons for the pick and even goes on to give the reasons for not picking WCH? Reverse psychology at its finest. The chalkboard at WCH this morning probably said “Etrain posters say WCH doesn’t have enough” and “a different WC team favored”. The pre-race speech was probably something like ‘nobody is putting us through to states, nobody thinks we have enough! We know we have enough! The only thing right about that Etrain post is that 10 seconds at the 16:45 level is worth 30 points. We know we “have enough” to get those 10 seconds! We get those 10 seconds each man, we’re at states! We didn’t show up at 7:00 every morning in August to not be able to find those 10 seconds. Let’s show Etrain is wrong!” That’s pure genius.

    3. Anyone who thinks coach k uses a chalkboard, motivatinal speeches or is impacted by anything Etrain thinks has never met the man.

    4. When was the last year WCH didn't go as a team or send at least one individual? The 1990's or something?

      Delete
    5. You know he was really picking his own team 5th so he nailed it 1-5.

  6. If I remember correctly, lower merion was about 20th at the mile as a team. Awesome run by them. And CBW? That was a sick pack showing. Finished within 30 points of DTW. Turning into one of the big XC programs and peaking at the right time. They can actually still improve through to states for sure.

DTW ain't done. This is pretty consistent with the last couple years. This team has been much better in Hershey than Lehigh. I think they will improve. That being said, CRN is far and away the favorite right now for states.

Overall, 4 teams back to states for the third straight year and a clutch performance by LM.

  7. Spring Ford almost had no one go! Ainscoe got second-to-last spot. Conestoga also looked really good.

  8. Aisling Devlin would have been the 7th varsity runner on 4 of the 5 dudes state qualifiers today. That's impressive. Just sayin.

  9. CRN without a doubt tops in the state right now. CRN, Carlisle, LaSalle, DTW, Seneca Valley.

    1. Even if Hoey had stayed at DTW they still would have been smoked yesterday by CRN.

      Delete
    2. CRN is definitely looking strong, but watch out for CB West. That spread is crazy. 5 seconds separate their 1st guy from their 4th. Even their 7th guy can still run a 16:33. Also don't underestimate Carlisle's front runners. If they have a good day as a team I think they've got the title in the bag.

  10. When was the last time a team that won the XC Chesmont's league championship not only failed to qualify for state, but failed to send one individual?

    What happed to Rustin?

    1. Ummm, they had a bad day? There's probably five other teams that had realistic state aspirations and came up short too. No need to re-live it, just take a break and then gear up for indoor.

    2. Chesmonts is no where near as critical a meet as Districts. Some teams could have taken it lightly, like Avon Grove for example. They didn't have a great performance at Chesmonts but really came to play at D1.

      Delete
  11. Affolder went 15:17 after going out in 5:21 at mile 1. N. Henderson had no chance and if the brothers hadn't transferred he'd probably have been the favorite for states.

    1. He said in his interview that he went out in 5:01

  12. Affolder will win states and he would have beaten Brophy last year. CRN and DTW will both bury Carlisle number 5 and go 1, 2.

  13. i'm very interested in how slow many of these races went out this weekend. Almost every meet went out in about 5 flat, and often times we see at least a few guys go out under 4:50 or close to it. This allowed for strong, even second miles and quick finishes. a really interesting tactic that i'm not sure noah will subscribe to next week. listening to his interview this weekend i would guess his strategy is to go out really hard and hope to take many runners with him to burn out the field in order to help carlisle runners finish stronger. if teams like CRN and DT West can go out conservative and pick off runners again this week this might come to their advantage. the small issue here with the moving up process of the race might be more difficult on this new hershey course that has very tight turns and small width running. it might be that some teams go out a bit slower and totally get caught back and are unable to pass anyone.

tactics should be very interesting in this race. i think DT West is much better than they showed this weekend. i'm shocked only one runner from this squad went under 16 minutes. I thought they would have at least 3-4 runners under 16. i also think jack wisner deserves a HUGE shout out. this kid based on his previous races would have been around 40-55th in this race, but ends up placing 24th overall. if he can be one of the top sophomores in the state and place around the top 60-70 runners he might be the one who makes the biggest point switch against CR North's top 5.

    1. Dwest has probably been a little overrated all year. There's no way they were holding back at Districts after getting burned by Rustin at Chestmonts. They have a lot of depth but nobody who could break 16:00 at Lehigh. They can't win states with no one who can break 16:00 at Lehigh.

      Delete
    2. i certainly did think the chesmont runners would be much stronger at districts as a whole this season. i think what will be a huge difference in this championship is how many teams have these tight packs. teams like DT West, LaSalle, NA, and CB West will most likely put 7 in front of Carlisle's 5.

      Delete
    3. Nobody got burned by Rustin at Chesmonts, Dwest ran their JV and almost won the race, if anything that's impressive.

      Delete
    4. Both DTW and WCH held out some guys at Chestmonts probably thinking they had enough for 1-2 anyway and got burned by Rustin. At the end of the year Rustin is the Chesmont league champions and have the banner in their gym forever to prove it. What will DTW? Maybe a team trophy from Oakbourne Relays and Westtown Invite.

      Delete
    5. But Dwest will be at Hershey and Rustin won't...

      Delete
    6. Yes there is a stark difference between Rustin, DWest and WCH. Some teams consider a Chesmont championship trophy the pinacle for their school. Hopefully Rustin will be at the state meet this weekend cheering both DWest and Henderson on. Please remember to stay behind the ropes and please don't interfere with the athletes competing.

      Thanks

    7. Nobody will remember DWest's 4th place finish at Hershey.
2016 Chesmont Champions is a great accomplishment for any team.

      Delete
    8. I've always wondered this and maybe Rustin can tell us; do the companies that manufacture banners for schools charge extra to put an astericks next to the year of the championship?

      Delete
    9. ^The point of the entire season is to make it to the state championship. While winning the Chesmont is an accomplishment, I would bet that Rustin would give up that win in a heart beat if it meant them getting to Hershey. I highly doubt DTW or WCH has any regrets that they didn't win Chesmonts and DTW only lost by 5 points(?) with their JV.

      Delete
    10. ^ Maybe 25 out of several hundred teams make it to states. Most don't have a chance to get to states but they field a team anyway. The "point of the entire season" should be to do you best for yourself, for your team and with your team. Some programs don't get that.

      Delete
    11. ^of course, I agree 100%. Just because a team is good doesn't mean they don't have those goals also. I assume those are a given for every team. I guess it just comes down to what goals those teams have. League title, district title, state title? I guess I am just saying don't discount a state caliber teams "4th place" finish that they work just as hard hard to get as the league championship team who worked equally hard. Different programs, different agendas.

      Delete
    12. Meanwhile, outside of the Chesmont league, CRN was dominant.

      Delete
    13. ^ DWest and Henderson work hard at developing large JV squads. Many members of those JV squads are seniors and juniors that may never see varsity, yet they still go out and bust their butts everyday. There is nothing wrong with rewarding these guys with some varsity oportunities as they would probably be varsity on 10 of the other Chesmont teams. For a coach to do this knowing their team may by sacrificing another trophy is in fact a program that "gets it". They get that there is more to running than picking up trophys.

      Delete
    14. ^ What a bad excuse. They could have "rewarded" their JV with opportunities at Manhattan, or Carlsile invites instead of the league championship. More likely they thought too lightly of the Chesmont competition, the same competition that they seem to think their JV probably could have made varsity on the 10 of the other teams. It did cost them the championship and the trophy. Bet they don't make that mistake next year.

    15. Why does everyone have such difficulty spelling "Carlisle"

      Delete
    16. Many coaches believe that having their athletes run in big meets is important experience for runners. As long as Chesmonts is not a qualifier to advance to anything, it will always be a meet lesser in status than some of the bigger open multi-state meets. In the past it usually has still been a predictor of a team that would advance to Hershey, as the winner has always advanced through districts to Hershey until this year.

      Delete
    17. Remember that here at Rustin, we have only existed as a school for what 11 years, so we don't have a 50 year program history like DWest. Coach Kelly has been coaching WCH longer than we have existed as a school. So for us winning a chesmont title is big even if it was against B squads. We can only hope to someday build the momentum to be a dynasty program like DWest and WCH; hats off to those programs.

  14. On another Affolder note, does anyone know if the family will be leaving the area after this year. I recall reading that they relocated for his father's 10 month military training/class of some sort. Wondering if Sam will remain and take over his brother's dominant reign, while crushing the dreams of all the PA natives! :)

  15. 1. Carlisle: too strong upfront. #3 has been on a tear and may hold the key. #4 is solid. #5 is vulnerable but they have 6 and 7 that have closed the gap.
    2. CRN: I have them winning slightly pts. but I’m not sure how well they can run hills in Hershey. Top 6 runners definitely had great race in Lehigh and I’m not sure if they can carry it over in hershey. Anyway, too close to call. If everyone races the way they did in Lehigh, hands down they win.
    3. LAS: I like their top 3 and 4-7 have really closed the gap. LAS have ran well in hills and always seemed to do well in states.
    4. LD: Wow, their top #3 is amongst the best in the state (minus Carlisle), #4 has stepped up. I’m a bit nervous with #5
    5. DTW: Not the best race in Lehigh but my feeling is that this team will rebound in Hershey. If you are going to have an off day, better to do it the week before.
    6. COH: Strong up front, #4 (Donavan) has showed signs of breaking out. This team is thin. Gap between 5 and 6/7 is too great.
    7. Mechanics: Nice top 2, #3 is solid and 4-5 is right not too far behind
    8. CBW: Great race and tight spread. I would be surprise if they will have the same spread at Hershey
    9. SV: I like their top 3, gap from 4/5 is tight.
    10. NA: Unless 2 runners have a breakway race, they will be top 10.

Note: Carlisle and CRN are so close that it’s a toss up.
LAS, LD, DTW, COH and Mechnicsburg so closely bunched that they are a toss up. They are just slightly behind Carlisle and CRN
CBW , SV and NA are toss up: Great race from any of these team can propel them in top 5

These teams are so unbelievably closed, that I wouldn’t be surprise if any of top 6 wins.

  16. @ForrestCRN Idk what you are saying about koza having speed, he's never broken 10 minutes in the 2 mile (10:05/441 PRs). He is ALL strength. Besides earley and keller, no runner on CRN has even come close to breaking 2. also, keller and earley are clearly strength speed guys, as they both ran 1540s this past weekend and have run consistently well at all distances and course types. Also, idk what people are saying with crn not being good at hills? Consistently, there best race is at states year after year. Very often, crn runners place similarly at states as they did at districts. Before you all comment online, do at least SOME research.

    2. I'm not saying CRN are not good in hills. All I'm saying this that some runners may not be good in hills and I'm not sure if this applies to some runner in the CRN squad. Like I said, if they run like they did in Lehigh, they win hands down.

    3. my apologies, i really thought Koza was CRN's 800m leg from last year but it was Earley. sorry about the mix-up. but i agree that CR North will be just fine on the hershey hills. Carlisle's #5 is going to have to score them less than 60 team points if they are going to make it close.
