Weekend Review: Joyce Makes A Name; Creese Impresses; Tons of PA Alumni Results

Before I get into it, I’ve been harassed by some of my buddies about not giving them shout-outs so pity me for a moment. S/O to Jack Mustain. If you still read this I’ll be pretty impressed. S/O to “The Little Dogs”. You know who you are.

Alright enough of that. First off, I apologize for how much this was. There was a lot to cover so I tried to get most of the notable stuff. A lot of PA alum action happened this week so I have separated that into a different section and put it below if you want to check that out. I am also going to create a separate post about the 3000St from the Pepsi invitational. You’ll figure out what I mean in a day or two.Read, comment, and enjoy!

Cal vs Stanford

800

Cal took first in this race with Eugene Hamilton running 1:48.98. PA’s own Luke Lefebure (Stanford) runs 1:49.77 for second. Not bad but still not where Luke should be at. You’d at least expect him to be mid to low 1:48. Remember that Lefebure placed 6th at outdoor NCAA’s last year. Ellis Newton (Cal) took third in 1:50.31.

1500

Pretty outstanding race. 5 guys were under 3:45 so the pace must’ve fast from the gun. So who won? It had to be one of Stanford’s guys like McGorty, Olson, or maybe Coyle right? Nope. California’s Thomas Joyce runs an outstanding 3:39.43. You’ve got to be pumped if you’re a fan of the sport mainly because Joyce beat out Olson and McGorty and did it with a great time. I’m trying not to get too excited but he’s now big on my radar and I’m curious to see just how low he can go. McGorty was second in 3:40.62. Not that far off from Joyce and a time that should catch the attention of many. A medal at NCAA’s should definitely be in the back of his mind. Erik Olson grabs third in 3:42.31.

PA’s Tom Coyle runs 3:45.54. He should be proud of that time as it puts him around 4 flat for a full mile so he’s pretty close to where he was during indoors.

3000

Not only did he win the 1500, but Joyce came back to win the 3k in 8:00.50. Amazing double and it only makes me more of a fan of this guy. Jack Keelan (Stanford) runs a close 8:01.03 for second. The XC monster, MaksimKorolev (Stanford), struggles a bit running 8:13.22. Hopefully he isn’t completely burned out from his XCendeavors and can find his rhythm for the rest of the outdoor season. He should be an outstanding 10k guy.

3000St

The times here weren’t overwhelmingly impressive, but California goes 1,2,3 to sweep the event. This was probably a huge blow to Stanford considering they didn’t expect to lose the 15 or the 3k. Collin Jarvis, Yohaness Estifanos, and Seamus Land run 9:19.08, 9:20.79, 9:25.25 respectively.

-In my opinion, I think this is an upset. On paper, Stanford should’ve won the 15 and the 3k. There’s also an argument that they should’ve won the 800 as well. However, Joyce really came in and pulled off some wins that I don’t think Stanford was expecting. In the end, Cal beats Stanford 101-62.

UCLA vs Oklahoma

800

Nick Hartle (UCLA) takes number 1 honors with a time of 1:48.07. Zac Randall (OK) runs 1:49.96 for second and his teammate Malcolm Wankel finishes third in 1:51.33.

1500

UCLA sweeps the event with Austin O’Neil taking the win in 3:44.51. Teammates Lane Werley and Daniel Herrera ran 3:45.23 and 3:45.56 respectively.

-UCLA goes 1-2 in the 3000 and in the 2000St. UCLA wins the meet 99 to 46

ACC-BIG 10 Ten Challenge

800

Rorey Hunter of Indiana wins the event with a time of 1:50.66. Michigan State grabs 2 and 3.

1500

Indiana continues to impress by sweeping the event. The frosh, Kyle DuVall leads the charge with a time of 3:45.85. His junior teammates Owen Skeete and Joshua Roche complete the sweep running 3:46.40 and 3:46.49. Another year of development and we could be hearing a lot about Indiana next track season.

3000St

Freshman Max Benoit of Michigan State runs a solid 8:58.24. His teammate Chris Collier runs 9:04.87 for second.

Yale vs Harvard

-Nothing really that interesting. Yale’s ace, Kevin Dooneywins the 5k with a time of 14:47.45. Not that great but just interesting to see his name in the results. Harvard beats Yale 99 to 62.

Husker Spring Invite

-Nebraska’s Moujtaba Mohammed wins the 800 in 1:50.69. David Timlin (Indiana State) wins the 1500 in 3:50.78.

Pepsi Team Invite

800

Keffri Neal has a great start to his season by beating out Oregon stud Niki Franzmair for the win. Neal ran 1:49.89 to match Franzmair’s 1:51.37. A little disappointed by how slow the times were. These two are big time 800 guys and you’d expect something a little more thrilling when they go at it. The race must’ve been tactical. On another note, I’m excited to see what Franzmair can do this season. He was kept hidden for a good portion of indoor so I want to see what he can whip out during outdoors.

1500

Oregon’s own Johnny Gregorek wins in 3:43.43. He led a massive slew of Oregon runners that had a somewhat disappointing showing. Only Gregorek was under 3:45. Second was taken by Kentucky’s Robert Sandlin in 3:45.74. Daniel Winn (Oregon) took third in 3:45.92.

3000St

Separate post to come

5000

Oregon cruises in to an easy 1,2,3 finish. King Cheserekled the way finishing in 14:00.72. Jenkins was second in 14:00.74 and Geoghegan was third in 14:00.75. Clearly this race was nothing for them. That said, running 14 flat and making it seem like a workout says something about the fitness this team is in. I just wish we could see what they really have soon. For now though, the Ducks will just look to get regional qualifying times in.

Bison Classic (Bucknell)

Tons of PA alum were in here. Please see separate PA alum section

800

The top collegiate finisher was Thomas Vandenberg of Carnegie Mellon. He ran 1:50.88 for the win.

1500

Great race here. The big names came out to go at it and it was not disappointing. Robby Creese (Penn St) gets a very solid win running 3:41.74 to beat out 800 star Jesse Garn (Binghamton) who ran 3:43.72. Brannon Kidder (Penn St) takes third in 3:44.57. That is a great early time for Creeseand I imagine he took it out somewhat hard from the gun if he did not want to deal with Garn’s kick. I thought Kidder could’ve done a little better but it’s early on in the season.

Texas Invite

800

Minnesota’s Goaner Deng gets a win in a time of 1:49.36Derrell Manhertz of Texas takes second in 1:49.38

1500

Blake Williams and Logan Emery go 1-2 for Texas running 3:52.76 and 3:53.19 respectively.

Weber State Open

1500

Cristian Soratos (Montana St) makes his outdoor debut as a relevant name. He cruises to a 3:44.24 win over Eric Shellhorn (Utah St) who ran 3:47.89. Solid time for Soratosbut of course he can do better when he’s put into the right race. What is intriguing is that Soratos is the favorite to win the NCAA title. Assuming Cheserek runs the 5k/10k double, Soratos has to be the favorite based on indoor results. Will he still be the favorite a week before? Maybe. But he’ll be in the talks for a title no matter what.

Mason Spring Invite

A good amount of PA alum here. See PA alum section for updates on them

800

Nate Gordon of Georgetown runs 1:50.99 to win the event. Georgetown continues to add to their dangerous mid-distance depth. PA alum Christian Sanders (LaSalle) was second in the event running 1:51.55.

1500

G-Town continues their dominance with Cole Williams taking the win with a time of 3:44.13. Behind him was Rob Napolitano (Columbia) and Ryan Manahan (Gtown). I’ll try to control myself on my whole Georgetown obsession but they are picking up right where they left off which can be dangerous for other teams they face. I also really like Rob Napolitano as a sleeper pick this season. I expect him to drop something big in the later portion of the season.

John McDonnell Invite

800

The 800 was dominated mainly by Tulsa. Tulsa goes 1,2, and 4 with Elijah Silva taking the win in 1:48.78. His teammates Simon Greiner and Adam Palamer go 1:48.90 and 1:49.04 respectively. Will Crocker (Missouri) followsup his excellent 1500 at Stanford with a 1:48.99. He’s another guy on my watch list.

1500

Oklahoma State took full control of this event and with Chad Noelle leading the way running 3:43.80. His teammates filled in spots 2,3, and 4 behind him. Mathew Fayers, Justin Vilhauer, and Anthoney Armstrong ran 3:48.41, 3:49.36, and 3:50.88 respectively.

Colorado Invite

800

Harry Fisher and Thomas Atkinson go 1-2 running 1:49.02 and 1:49.80 respectively. What was really interesting was that the long distance Colorado guys like Ben Saarel, Morgan Pearson, and Ammar Moussa were in this and ran between 1:52 and 1:54. Interesting to see them trying to get a little speed in. Maybe a 1500 is in the future for those guys? Just speculation.

3000St

Connor Winter gives the 3kSt a try and gets a win in 9:10.60. Not bad, but I’m really just interested to see him get a 1500 race again. He did an outstanding job at Stanford and I really hope he can replicate that performance again.

Miami Hurrican Alumni Invite

800

Villanova sweeps the event going 1,2,3. Josh Lampron is the first through the line with a time of 1:49.38. National 2013 Indoor 800 (high school) champion Ben Malone gets second in a time of 1:49.96. Ishmael Muhammad finishes the sweep with a 1:50.84. A Villanova 4x800 at Penn Relays should be in the works.

Georgia Spec Towns National Team Invitational

800

Simon Holden (Wake Forest) is the winner in 1:50.88.

1500

Simon Holden completes the successful double taking this event in 3:48.14. His teammate Kyle Graves was close behind in 3:51.60.

AI vs MS Border Clash

800

Brandon Hazouri of Samford gets the win in 1:48.12. He’s followed by a duo of Ole Miss runners Craig Engels and Holland Sherrer. They ran 1:48.27 and 1:48.63. I really like Engels. He had a very underrated indoor season and I think he can drop something pretty solid if he peaks at the right time.

1500

Robbie Farnham-Rose (Alabama) wins the event in 3:44.72. Kane Grimster (Auburn) and Trevor Gilley (Mississippi) follow behind in 3:45.45 and 3:45.60. Not sure what to say on FR. I feel that anyone under 3:45 has the potential to make NCAA’s but they need to get into the right race and I need to something more from FR for me to really get an idea on what he’s capable of.

Duke Invite

800

Cory Nicholls (UNC) is the winner in 1:50.79. His teammate, O’Neal Wanliss was second in 1:50.85. Duke’s Henry Farley was third in 1:50.87.

Mile

Not sure why they have a mile but I’m not complaining because PA alum Nate McClafferty got a win in 4:07.36. Not a stellar time or anything but I’m a fan and I think having wins under your belt is only a positive thing no matter the time.

New Mexico Quad Meet

800

Peter Callahan (New Mexico) returns! He wins in 1:48.79. He ran 3:39.90 last spring so I expect him to go after the 1500 again later this season. His teammate Edwin Herring was second in 1:49.18.

1500

New Mexico goes 1 through 5 with Ross Matheson running 4:03.03 for the win. Not really that great but every time I see New Mexico’s results, they are always sweeping the field. Maybe they should enter some higher caliber meets…

-Also to note, Adam Bitchell was not in the results.

All-Ohio Champs

800

D2 stud Drew Windle continues his success with a 1:47.80 win. He’s been running great and I think he can be under 1:46 this season.

Tennessee Sea Ray Relays

800

What kind of biased writer would I be if I didn’t mention my Virginia Tech Hokies? Prince Owusu-Mensah (VT)wins the event in 1:50.97. Nothing spectacular but the guy typically places pretty well as you can see here.

1500

The 1500 is taken by none other than Neil Gourley of Virginia Tech. He’s followed by his teammate Patrick Jospech who struggled quite a bit at indoor Nats a month ago. The two Hokies went 3:47.54 and 3:47.65 respectivelyPA alum Daniel Jaskowak finished in ninth running 3:50.13. Solid time for him considering he’s more of a 3k guy (at least I think so).

4x800

Not that important to most but because the winner is Virginia Tech I gotta mention it. VT wins in a great time of 7:33.58. That’s an outstanding time and should be thought about when Penn Relays rolls around. PA alum Dan Jaskowak was on the relay.

West Chester Henderson alum and Colorado Buffalo ReinyBarchet announces via Facebook that he will no longer run competitively. He will pursue a double major in Math and Physics. That’s pretty big news. I felt pretty strongly that he was one of the very few that had the ability to keep up with that Colorado training regiment. Best of luck to Barchet on his other endeavors. He’ll go down as one of the best, if not the best, number two man in PA high school history.

Thank you all for reading! Don’t forget to comment aboutanything that pops out at you, questions you had, or results that I missed.

Keep on keepin on,

  1. Its a shame about Reiny, and I don't think anyone was expecting Callahan to run the 800 rather than the 1500, but as you pointed out, he's got a little bit more speed then a 3:39 might show

    1. I'd have to agree with you there. He'll have a great 1500 but I think his 800 has the potential to go lower
