Dreams and Records

Yesterday I went back and read my first ever blog post. And I’m not talking first post on this blog. I’m talking all the way back in the etrain’s Track Blog: Nuff Said days. Posted on June 25, 2010, it was called Dreams and Records and recounted the journey of the CB South boys record setting 4x8 in 2009. Apparently, I used to be a big fan of exclamation points. I didn’t know how to spell ridiculous (still don’t honestly, but I use spell check more nowadays) and I wasn’t afraid to utilize the mid-post rhetorical question concept. The article still has zero comments and only 78 views. If you didn’t look for it, you would never know it was there.

But the post set the tone for everything that would come after. At the end of the article I wrote: “Don’t listen to the doubters, set big goals, work hard and don’t stop believing”. Journey references aside, I still feel like these words defined the next eight years. Hopefully not just for me, but also for the runners who would eventually read my words.

Three years later, I announced my (first) retirement. On May 27, 2013 I wrote Brett Favre where I said my good bye to the blog community. I took the time to go back and read this one too. It contained some nice sentiments and touching moments, but what I found the most entertaining was a prediction. A prediction that, consistent with most of the predictions I’ve made on these blogs, has been proved completely wrong.

I mistakenly wrote that, five years from now, I would be “completely unconnected to this blog and to the high school track scene. The etrain name will likely disappear into obscurity”. Whoops. Turns out that no matter how much information and experience you have, you can’t predict the future.

Yes, life is unpredictable – and not always in the fun way. I know many of the runners on this site have overcome serious obstacles during their career to reach this point. I hope they can understand that their struggle has been an inspiration, even if it wasn’t necessarily chronicled on this site or others like it. One 4x800 squad in particular stood out to me among the performances, drawing success from the remnants of tragedy. I dedicate this final post to that team and all others with stories like it that I may not know.

Although I’ve typed over one million words on these sites, I continue to believe the most important words were the ones that each of my commenters posted. The stories, the analysis, the predictions. Each contribution builds off one another. As individuals, the trials and tribulations of life and training can overwhelm us. But as a community of runners, there is nothing we cannot overcome.

Today this blog ends, but our community is stronger than ever. What was cultivated here on this site will endure. It will evolve. But regardless of what form it comes in, the next iteration of this blog will continue to be what the ones before it were. A place to learn. A place to grow. A place to come together.

A place for dreams and records.

  1. Thank you so much to everyone who has read and supported this project. If anyone out there is thinking of starting their own site, feel free to advertise on here so people know where to go. My email is jarrettfelix1130@gmail.com if you would like to bounce any ideas off me.

  2. Not to spam my own post, but if anyone is interested, you can read Part I of the book I've been writing, The Running Diaries. There are a couple reading options - first, you can email me and I'll send you a full copy of the entire book. Or you can sign up to be on a mailing list and I'll send you a chapter a week until you've read everything. With the second option, I'll flow right from Part I into Part II chapter wise. Part II is completely finished just yet, but the first half is complete so that gives me some wiggle room to provide the chapters.

Some of you may have seen The Running Diaries pop up here on the site in the past. Many of those chapters/ideas are in what I've written, but it's also (in my opinion) better structured, in a more logical order and features additional content that hasn't been posted before.

    1. Alright one last quick thing - Part I of the book is now up on Amazon as well. You can get a digital copy or print copy from there if you'd prefer going that route over the email route.

  6. Does anyone know what's up with Carlos Shultz? Did he transfer Bishop Shanahan? He ran a race for them in indoor but then I haven't seen his name at all in outdoor.

    1. I'm sure that Carlos did transfer. He ran 1-2 times indoors for Shanahan - including the 1600 leg of the DMR at states. He ran 2 or 3 league meets and 1 or 2 2k Steeplechase races in the Spring. As good as he is, he would probably have been Shanahan's #3 or #4 miler. I've heard it suggested that he doesn't enjoy "32 left turns" nearly as much as he enjoys cross country.

    1. 1600 went through the 8 in 2:16, crazy kick on the 3rd lap and especially 4th lap.

      Delete
  8. The 1600 went 'tactical', which basically means no one had the gumption to go after it so it became a kickers race. Most probably wish they had run it differently.

The 3200 went a little different, Rusty and Beveridge got right into it and Smucker took a chance and went with them. It was nice to see that kind of effort from Smucker, maybe if he held back throughout he could have taken 3rd but he put himself in the mix for a while. It was a calculated effort considering there was a chance the heat could have impacted the leaders. In the end he didn't drop back much.

I'm really going to miss Etrain.

    10) Alex Milligan

    8) Nate Henderson
    7) Sam Ritz
    6) Josh Hoey
    5) Drew Magaha
    4) Zach Brehm
    3) Jake Brophy
    2) Jaxon Hoey
    1) Tony Russell

    1. Josh #1 easily. I’d put Brophy over Russell too. Just my opinion, but I respect your rankings.

    2. Josh is probably the best of the lot, but his results just aren't there. The last two years it seemed like he used XC as base training for track, he didn't even run states XC his jr year. This senior year in track he basically retired from the PA scene. He's got a couple of state golds from last year but others have done more.

Brophy and Russell stack up closely in XC with repeat golds which is incredible. But Russell had better range and results on the track.

      1. Josh Hoey
      2. Noah Affolder
      3. Tony Russell
      4. Tom Mallon
      5. Jake Brophy
      6. Drew Magaha
      7. Kevin James
      8. Zach Brehm
      9. Dom Perretta
      10. Jaxson Hoey

Plus so many other greats. I for sure have enjoyed this blog immensely. It's been such a great way to learn about PA's talented running scene. As a running junkie, there's nothing else I could've asked for. Etrain, I am so thankful for your contributions over the years. Kudos to such an incredible run.

    4. It is BECAUSE he used XC as base training for track AND BECAUSE he laid low in the PA scene that he has been able to perform at the level he has. There really is no purpose for running a 1:47 athlete against a field of 1:53 guys. I'm assuming Hoey's goal is to make it to worlds in July. I think he missed by one place last year and wasn't nearly as strong. Unfortunately for us who want to see him race, racing 1:53 competition at a District Meet in May isn't really furthering that goal. I think Josh Hoey is probably the best mid-distance athlete to come out of PA in the past 20 year and perhaps ever. What people should be talking about is that his brother Jonah is now 1.5-2 seconds faster at 800M as a sophomore when compared to Josh. Josh dropped 6 seconds indoors and 5 seconds outdoors from Sophomore to Junior year (he also transferred to a new program) If Jonah realized only half that drop - he could be flirting with 1:50 next year. Scary to think, we may be talking about Josh Hoey in a few years as "Jonah's older brother".

      Delete
    5. Yes, I get it. I'm not criticizing Josh Hoey with that ranking. I recognize his 800 and mile times show he’s right there with Vandergrift as the most talented/driven runner in PA high school history. There is no denying he's performing at a great level this year. But as far as PA high school results go, he simply gave up a lot to perform at that great level he’s at now.

Had he run for PA high school results this year he would have won multiple golds, and his team would have won indoor and his team would have won outdoor by plenty. But he's been there/done that, in both XC and track. In order to maximize his success he gave up the PA scene - with the exception of the outdoor 4x400, which was an awesome team performance.

So since he gave up his senior year in PA high school he’s not in my top 5. He could have been and would have been #1 if piling up PA high school state wins was the goal. But he gave that up for bigger plans. Heck, Noah Affolder is probably the 2nd most talented PA runner during the Etrain era but he was only here for 1 year of XC and 1 incredible performance in Indoor so he didn't even make my list. And his brother Sam was probably top 5 talent wise but again with just one year not enough accumulated results. Sorry.

  11. It's kind of disappointing that Hoey hasn't taken a shot at sub 4:00. He's likely to do it some day but only 6 or 7 have done it while in high school. He's got the ability so why not take the shot to make history? That would be national news and kind of cool. Even if he came up short, so what, take the shot.

  12. Only three months until the Invites begin. Better start summer training soon.

  13. There's a huge void now in the PA distance scene. Personally I think if someone would take it over they could charge $25 subscription and get 200 or 300 subscribers. That's not a bad part time gig. This blog was always so much better than the 'official' alternative.

  14. Like many long time Etrain readers I've been through one of these Etrain retirements before. So I’m wondering is this really it? I mean, he gave us like a six month warning but can Etrain just turn it off like that this time and stay retired?

My guess is yes, and no. I'm not sure anybody can fully walk away from a passion and his passion for PA High School running is legendary. But life changes, things get busier, and the time demands to maintain this blog must be incredible. So I think the retirement will last a bit longer this time around. However, I do suspect there’s still hope for us running freaks! I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe 15-20 years from now that there’s an Etrain Jr. on the PA high school running scene and once again the blog comes back to life!

I don't comment as much as I used to but I never miss reading a post or the comments and I particularly liked Forrest and Jiminy's insight this year.

I had a retirement comment back on the Brett Farve post that still rings true today: "This blog was absolutely perfect."

    Thanks Etrain!

    1. We'll have to see how well Fitch comes back from an injury. Rumor is he hasn't been able to run much since states because of it.

Not sure how much truth there is to this, but I heard that he had some sort of ED throughout Freshman year XC and dropped a bunch of weight by the time WPIALs came around and just hasn't been the same since. If that's true then it seems like he bounced back from that fairly well so I wonder if he does the same for this injury.

I mainly used last year's states results to find these guys, so I'm sure there were some non-Varisty guys on these teams or even other teams that had great track years that I don't know about. Also, there were a few teams with really good top 3s, but I was not able to find much of anything for a 4 or 5 at this time. A few teams *cough*La Salle*cough* had a number of other guys I could have added on the list but I didn't want to go past 5 for each. Please add any transfers that you know about or track stars that I missed, as well as any whole teams that you believe are slept on.

    2. HMT thank you very much for the effort and time for the list. But, of all the teams returning, what compelled you to put Shanahan on this list? That frankly is not all that great of a returning squad, and I could easily name at least 5 teams in D1 alone that return a better core than that.

      Delete
    3. No problem Forrest and Anonymous! And you’re right, looking back on it, Bishop Shanahan doesn’t really deserve to be on this list. It’d probably be better to figure out which teams have the best shot of making it out of d1 before including a team like them in a state discussion. All they really have is a low stick in Hoey, and then a solid runner in Ettien, who hasn’t reached his prs from before that injury still.

      -HMT

      Delete
    4. HMT, I really thought you had it right including Shanahan, that team has a ton of potential in XC and I think they belong on your list. But there's a big IF, which is IF they're going all out in XC. Assuming they are, you've got Hoey and Schultz who could be/should be two very low sticks. But they had 3 other sophs drop into the 4:30's during outdoor in the 1600. Now that doesn't guarantee anything in XC but it does show 3 guys who improved big time during their soph season. Assuming they all run XC and probably continue to improve as sophs/juniors do, that's a real solid varsity in XC. And they had some others not too far behind. So I think Shanahan is real threat to make some noise this XC, IF they want to.

    7. RJJL, I completely forgot about the Shultz transfer, I have no clue why. Thanks for the reminder. You're right if they actually try to do well in XC they have a good shot with that top 2, but the next 3 will really have to step up, whoever they may be. Making it out of D1 could be a challenge this year since it seems like there are no clear favorites yet. La Salle is definitely my early favorite based on their depth, but I'm sure some other teams will catch up by mid-season. I think DTW might be a team to watch out for with Sewall leading the way. SV also has a really strong top 2.

Beverige ran 4:16 for the mile and 4:12 for the 1600m. His 3200m PR is 9:07 and 15:27 for the 5k. What I think makes Skolneckovich special was his 28th finish at FLN. I would be curious to know how many non state champs ran in that. (He beat Sam Affolder, and Henderson in that race who both have state titles)

    4. i honestly haven't thought that far into it. i will speak with etrain in the coming weeks about this. maybe even more to Stride Report. i'm really digging their format/layout. (and maybe they'd let me comment on some professional racing as well)

  28. A general question but is racing during the summer helpful or will it lead to burnout by October?

    1. That's a conversation to have with your coach, but I personally believe one or two races at different points in the summer can be beneficial in tracking fitness and making tweaks in training if need be. Can also depend on the individual and how they can handle a heavy workload.

    2. i look at a guy like Isiah Harris (recent Penn State 800m national champion) who ran over 30 800m races from January until June these past two years and you can see how it takes a toll on his body (although the kid is a total stud).

i think there is enough racing in the XC season, particularly as someone from District one where the dual meets are also quick and competitive. i don't think it's necessarily bad to run a couple races during the summer, but i wouldn't be "racing" them in so far as you're trying to go 100% and drain yourself. maybe like 90% effort.

  29. Does Josh Hoey's 800 last week count as a PA high school record?

  30. The West Chester Mile had some Chesmont guys in it and shows what their current fitness level is. DTW is going to be strong again this year.
