Presenting .... The Etrain Oscars!

EDIT: If you want to check out the first post in The Etrain 11 for 2016, Click Here
EDIT #2: After some serious YouTube searching, I've got some potential relay splits for the states AAA 4x8. Working on AA next, but you can check out all the work on LXV+

Well, there’s not a ton of buzz right now with the sport transitioning into down time, so I thought we’d try and create some! Introducing the first (sort of) annual (maybe) Etrain Oscars! This will be an awards show to honor some of PA’s best performances from the past 12 months including Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track.

If all goes well, we will have a proper fan voting that will (hopefully) be anonymous yet keep the voting a secret until the final results are announced. If things go really well, we will have some type of “Oscars Awards Show” through our high tech google technology. If things don’t go as well, we will still share the results on the blog for everyone to appreciate.

Below, I’ve outlined the categories for the awards show. We are looking for nominations from you for each category. We have some of our own picks in mind and will likely include those as well, but we want to hear your opinions and give our readers the best possible opportunity to be involved in all stages of this event.

So comment, message or email us with your nomination ideas (@TheRealTrain11 on twitter, email jarrettfelix1130@gmail.com, comment on the blog) and tell your friends about this upcoming event! We want to create some genuine excitement for this thing!

P.S. Worth noting, due to the nature of our blog, it will likely be a distance heavy awards show. For those who enjoy the other events in our sport, feel free to reach out and join our writing staff. A more well rounded group will produce more well rounded content.

Best Picture
Best Race of the Year
Awarded to the best race, from either Cross Country or Track and Field, featuring a PA athlete. This is not best performance, meant to highlight an individual’s performance, but rather best race meant to highlight an exciting, impressive or particularly memorable event.

Best Actor
Best Individual Performer
Awarded to the best runner in the year. Voters can choose to consider an athletes full body of work over three seasons or one particularly exception performance or season. It’s up to each reader’s own interpretation of “best”.

Best Actors
Best Performance by a Team or Relay
Similar to Best Actor, this is open to interpretation as well. Voters can select a relay, a XC team or a track team. They can also consider a team’s entire body of work over three seasons.

Best Supporting Actor
Best Performance by a #2 Runner on a Team or Relay
This award is meant to highlight the efforts of a runner who may not be the “star” of a team, but made important contributions towards a school’s achievements during the year, whether that be on relays or in team scoring for track and cross country.

Best Animated Feature
Best Performance by an Underclassmen
This is essentially the “Best Actor” award, but for freshman and sophomores. Again, the voters can interpret exactly what constitutes “best”.

Cinematography
Best Meet of the Year
Awarded to the best meet of the year. This award is similar to best race of the year, but considers all the events contested at a given meet and the total drama, excitement and experience of said meet.

Costume Design
Best Uniforms
Pick your favorite uniforms that you’ve seen this season! It can be as a simple as listing a high school or, if you want to go in depth, feel free to get specific.

Best Directing
Best Coaching Performance
This award highlights the coaches who help each team and athlete hit their potential. Feel free to list a school or program even if you don’t know the coach who is operating behind the scenes.

Best Documentary Feature
Best Post of the Year
Highlights the best blog post or news article you’ve read over the year. It could be a serious, dramatic story or a funny, humorous piece. Again, you can choose for yourself what constitutes “Best”.

Best Documentary Short Film
Best Comment of the Year
This award is the same as the best blog post, but is meant to highlight your contributes as commenters. If you can’t think of a specific moment or are having trouble skipping back through posts to find something, feel free to just give a commenters name or nickname or highlight a particular prediction or topic that was covered that you particularly enjoyed.

Film Editing
Best Upset of the Year
Which race produced the most surprising result of the year? There are plenty to choose from this year, but don’t feel limited to just state meets or just track. Any meet could have produced the biggest upset.

Best Foreign Language Film
Best Non-Distance Performance
This gives you a chance to highlight some of your favorite moments that weren’t covered on this blog. You can nominate a team, individual or race for this award. Feel free to get creative.

Make Up and Hair Styling
Best Cross Country Course
Pick your favorite course of the 2015 XC season.

Music (Original Song)
Best Running Song of the Year
What song was your go to for this season? Whether it be while training or trying to get pumped up before a big race, it all counts. We will even accept songs that weren’t released this year. Drake songs are recommended by Jarrett.

Visual Effects
Most Exciting Runner of the Year
Who did you enjoy watching the most? Maybe someone with a big kick or maybe a runner who was particularly gutsy and aggressive by setting a fast pace?

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Most Improved Runner
Which runner would you like to highlight for making big strides during the 2015-2016 season? It doesn’t have to be literally someone with a big stride.

Writing (Original Screenplay)
Best Story Line of 2015-2016
What’s the #1 story of this past year? Which story line made you want to tune into the blog, comment and discuss? Which storyline warmed your heart? Again, it’s all what you as the voters feel defines the 2015-2016 season. So feel free to get creative.

  1. Cool idea. Is it just send in nominations and then they'll be voting buttons? If so maybe you should leave this post here a few days so it doesn't get pushed down before people respond.

    1. Yep exactly, once we give people a chance to nominate we will open some type of poll to compile votes. I think we will probably do a survey monkey or something like that rather than a poll on the actual blog so that results can actually be a surprise when we reveal them in the presentation. Hopefully everyone will get involved and have fun with it!

  2. Best Picture
    Best Race of the Year
Lawrenceville Relays DMR during the winter, produced US #8, #9 and #10 at the time

    Best Actor
    Best Individual Performer
This is a tough one. I'll go Brophy. Eleven state medals and two golds in XC is hard to argue against. Runner up is Milligan.

    Best Actors
Best Performance by a Team or Relay
Council Rock North was amazing to watch during XC, not only because they're stacked, but also because their 1-5 split was lowest in the nation at one point (13 seconds!)

    Best Supporting Actor
Best Performance by a #2 Runner on a Team or Relay
Josh Goetz, CB East. 4:26/9:32/15:53 would be #1 on almost any team

    Best Animated Feature
    Best Performance by an Underclassmen
Spencer Smucker for me. A sophomore that's #1 on a good WCH team would be notable every year.

    Cinematography
    Best Meet of the Year
TFCAoGP Meet #8 in indoors. Almost as fast as meet of champs.

    Costume Design
    Best Uniforms
    Lower Merion

Paul Wilson, CB East. Scary good team at 3200

PIAA Champs 3200 in outdoors. Way to go Kravitz!

Brian Mass, CB West went from mid-low 16s in XC to district medalist in the 3200. Brian Iatarola also made strides and medaled in XC

  3. Best Team - Camp Hill (XC Class A State Champs, Outdoor Track Class AA State Runner Ups)

    Best Uniform - Wyomissing

Biggest Upset - 3200 at States. Shoutout Matt Kravitz.

  4. Note: I'm a WPIAL guy, so please excuse my bias

Best Picture/Best Race- Brophy outkicking Hoey at XC states. That was a pretty cool finish, plus there were like 8 other guys who broke 16. Great race.

Best Actor- Brophy again. He could not be stopped during XC and topped it off with an impressive run at nationals. Runner-up: Dom Peretta.

Best Actors- I'm gonna go with Seneca Valley's runner-up finish at WPIALs. Lebo was probably seen as the #2 team going in, but SV ran exceptionally well that day. We all knew Kolor would do his thing, but their pack 2-5 (all top 25) was something to watch.

Best Supporting Actor- Henry Sappey. Did this guy ever have a bad race? He was incredibly consistent during XC, and then stepped up his game on the track with that mile.

Best Animated Feature/Best Underclassman- I think the easy pick here is Josh Hoey, but I'll go in a different direction. I'll vote for the freshman tandems (and trios) that made some noise this year. Owori and Ketler from Seneca Valley, the Eissler's from Pennridge, and Endres/the Sands's at CB East all did some impressive things. The future's bright for these kids.

Cinematography/Best Meet- outdoor states for track. Big upsets in AAA, plus some history in AA. Truly a terrific meet all-around.

Costume Design/Best Uniforms- Not too sure here, but I do like O'Hara's dark blue unis with the big "O"

Best Directing/Best Coaching- John Neff from North Allegheny. They looked vulnerable after losing their big 3 in McGoey, Wharrey, and Seel, but they still won an 11th straight WPIAL title and were runner-up at states. That program continues to churn out studs, from Marc Migliozzi to Zach "Trenchcoat" Ehling. I have lots of respect for how that man keeps NA competitive.

Best Documentary Feature/Best Post- the top 100 XC runners of the decade. You could tell how much research went into that and it was a very comprehensive list.

Best Documentary Short Film/Best Post- someone can probably find a really funny post, but I'll bet that the guy who won the XC fantasy draft did a pretty good job. What was his name again?

Film Editing/Best Upset- Joe Espinal over Hoey and Wisner in the 800. Dropping a 3 second PR in the 800 on the biggest stage is no joke.

Best Foreign Language Film/Best Non-Distance Performance- Jordan Geist throwing the shot put. He brings a lot of excitement to the throws, and you have to hear an entire Edinboro crowd slow clap before he throws. Amazing.

Make Up and Hair Styling/Best XC Course- Cooper's Lake. You can honestly see the entire course, it's a challenging yet manageable layout, and the final sprint through the castle is awesome.

Music/Best Running Song- Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape". Don't kid yourself, it's catchy.

Visual Effects/Most Exciting Runner- Dom Peretta. Any time he steps on a track, something crazy can happen. The dude actually gets mad when he runs like a 1:52, he's that competitive.

Adapted Screenplay/Most Improved- Nick Wolk. I think the only time he lost to a WPIAL runner from August to May was a random indoor meet when he ran an 800. That's scary good when you consider how deep D7 is.

Original Screenplay/Best Story Line- finishing my homer picks, how about the year for WPIAL distance runners? 8 guys in the top 26 for AAA XC, 2-5 in the 3200, state titles for Peretta and Mackey...lots of great seasons.

    1. Good call on Sappy, he might have been the only DTW varsity runner to show up for every race in XC and he brought it everytime.

      Delete
    2. Sappey didn't run Ches Monts for XC because of the Manhattan double (like Ryherd and Jax). But otherwise, yes i'd agree

      Delete
  5. Looking at the LXV splits…. Its hard not to think Pennridge could've nipped State College at the line with a healthy Desko in. Lost by about 8.2 seconds, slowest leg was 2:01.1… If desko could've popped off just around 1:53 flat (extremely doable for the kid) then you're looking at an equivalent 7:37. There were so many what-if's this year, but man do I wish I could've seen that race unfold.

  6. CARLISLE has just become legit state xc contenders!!

    1. I was waiting for someone to bring this up so I could voice my opinion. I honestly couldn't be less excited. I don't understand why this is so mystical to people, like, woah whats it gonna be like to see an amazing pair of brothers transfer to a PIAA school? Sound at all familiar? Frankly, Carlisle doesn't have nearly the supporting cast that dwest had before the Hoey's arrival. We're gonna have to listen to non-stop hype about Carlisle, when in reality, the Affolders are gonna show up and (shocker)- run fast. Yes it makes Carlisle contenders, but I don't see them winning it all. If you make a mock meet of ALL the returning runners in PIAA AAA (mind you thats thousands of runners versus the couple hundred at the state meet, making the Affolder's inclusion even more relevant than it would be at a state meet), they still only finish 4th behind 3 D1 teams. Hate to be that goal debbie downer, but I just don't wanna see the hype surround two guys again and take away from the rest of the state's recognition, especially when this time around the team won't even be as good as dwests.

      Delete
    2. ^ I agree, but it's also important to note the improvement that the top two returning members of Carlisle made this spring (Isaac Kole and Jack Wisner) was drastic and will most likely translate to the course next fall. Wisner ran 1:57 for 800 and 4:30 in the 1600 as a frosh(!) and could make a drastic jump going into sophomore year. Kole, who will be a senior I believe, displayed 9:35 chops for 3200 to go along with 1:57 800 meter speed. Simply put, both of these dudes have range and based on their rapid improvement, I find it feasible that Carlisle could take the state crown if they continue to put the work in . Additionally, Sam Affolder is only a frosh as well and could conceivably make a big breakthrough going into this fall. All things that are important to keep in mind.

  7. Best Race: I'll second Brophy's XC title, it was the most exciting
    Actor: Brophy
Actors: DWest won 2 state meets and almost a 3rd outdoors. I'll zero in on their XC states race for a specific performance
Supporting Actor: No way you can't pick Sappey for both (a) being an incredible runner behind other incredible runners and (b) being consistent and supporting his team in clutch moments
Animated Feature: Josh Hoey is the easy pick here. HE WON THE PENN RELAYS MILE AS A SOPHOMORE
Cinematography: Outdoor states for all of the absurd upsets and surprises
Directing: Marrington has CRN primed for a takeover this year
    Editing: Espinal
    Foreign Film: Geist
Visual Effects: Gonna agree with the guy who said Perretta. Only wish he had taken a shot at a 4:04 type of time
Adapted Screenplay: I don't know anything about NA, so maybe he had some injuries in the past, but if we're going by milesplit, Marc Migliozzi dropped from 16:52/4:46/10:09 to 16:04 (at states!)/9:13. Unreal
OG Screenplay: seeing SC put it together for that 4x8 and win the meet as a team was a storybook ending to their underrated but excellent year

    ReplyDelete
  8. Animated Feature : Kamil Jihad .... 1:52.2 as a sophmore is absurd!! He does not get enough credit ...Coming from a PCL guy. Also Evan Addison, 1:57 Split at D12 and 4:17 Mile at Henderson, not a bad resume for either guys

    ReplyDelete
  9. Editing : Espinal winning the Title beating out Wisner and Hoey in the process..
Also #1 Seed on Heat Sheet Whitfield dropping a 1:53 at D12.. Very Unexpected.

Best Picture : State College 4x8 US #1 at States

Make up and Hair Styling : Hershey, most exhilarating course

  11. Best Actor (individual)–Jaxson Hoey with 2nd in state XC, 1st state indoor mile, 3rd state outdoor 800. Plus two state relay golds and two state team golds.
Best Animated Feature (underclassman) – Josh Hoey – Penn Relays Mile, plus 3rd state XC, 2nd state Indoor mile, 3rd state outdoor XC.
Best Supporting Actor – Sappey – 4th state XC, 7th state indoor 3000, 6th state outdoor 1600, and brought it at every race this year even though overshadowed.
Best Directing (coaching) – Coach Burns. XC champions, Indoor Champions, Outdoor runner up (by 1 point). And managed what has been speculated to be some big parent ego’s/involvement on both boys and girls side.
Best Documentary (post of the year) – That Henderson no-excuses urinal thing was classic and so true.
Film Editing (best upset) – Milligan winning the 1600 over a fresh Hoey and Kolor and with so much riding on the team outcome.
Best Foreign Language Film (non-distance) – No disrespect to McLemore but that pole vaulter for State College setting the tone for the team, and real close behind the shot putter who set the state record.
Make Up and Hair (best XC course) – Lehigh, because its fast but fair.
    Best Relay - State College 4x800 9:37
Music (original song) – an oldie but fitting for me….Running on Empty by Jackson Browne.

  12. Best meet is tough. XC has Foundation, that early one at Belmont and Paul Short are great, so is Carlisle. Indoor the meet of champs is nice. Outdoor the Henderson is strong, with great competition and well run. But everyone peaks for outdoors states and many spend their entire college careers trying to match those PR's they did at outdoor states.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Best performance by a team could be CBE XC getting to states with such a young team.

  14. Most of my nominees are mentioned above but how about:

    Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
    Most Improved Runner
Zach Lefever (Ephrata) went from unknown as a sophomore to

    2nd in D3 in 3200 outdoors in 9:22
    6th in state in 3200 in 9:19
Also ran 1:59 in 800 and 4:25 in 1600 this Spring.

  15. Best picture: AAA 1600
    Best actor: Domenic Peretta
Best supporting actor: Josh Hoey. If you consider xc indoor and outdoor I'll give a slight edge to Jaxson making Josh a supporting actor.
    Best Animated feature: Josh Hoey
    Cinematography: Outdoor States
Costume Design: DTW white uniforms with blue D
    Best Directing: SC
    Film editing: 800 AAA
Best foreign language film: really can not choose between Geist and Mclemore

  16. How about an award for the best race that wasn’t, the DTW DMR. 3:08, 46, 1:51, 4:10 plus 2 seconds for the .10ths change, 9:57. They could have been the best ever, it’s a shame it never came to be.
