  1. Haha classic Etrain! I love it!

My question: how are you picking the top 7's for the big names like Henderson and North Allegheny? They've certainly had more than 7 state-caliber runners over the past decade that belong in this hypothetical race.

I suggest adding a "B" team for these kind of programs. Each school has the ability to field a second squad, and its up to you to pick which teams actually get one. I think this way more qualified individuals would be able to be compared to one another.

  2. Haha yes, i encountered the "B" team scenario today. So here's basically my plan. If you made the qualifying standards outlined above (top 20 in D1 for example), you get to run at the meet regardless of how many people on your high school's squad are ahead of you. So, for example, Seamus Collins of Henderson was not in his team's top 7, but he had 3 (!) top 20 finishes in the district and thus gets to compete.

Now Collins was one of 10 Henderson runners who fell into this category. Therefore, Henderson gets a "B" as their second unit has 5 scorers. The final 3 runners are listed as Henderson "C" and get to compete, but won't be scored as part of the team scoring.

Out of fairness (since I know all the results) I'm putting the 7 best guys on "A" and the next 7 on "B". However, if any Henderson faithful would like to scramble their line up, they can and try and get 1, 2 or even 3 teams to state. If there's a taker out there, feel free to comment. I'll even provide the 17 eligible names if needed to make things easier.

I haven't done it yet, but I'd imagine a similar thing will happen with North Allegheny and potentially GFS/O'Hara. Maybe even a few more I haven't considered.

    Seem reasonable?

    1. I should also note the "state qualifying" works like this:
      D1 - Top 5 Teams, 25 Individuals
      D3 - 3, 15
      WPIAL - 3, 15
      12/Independent - 2, 10
      Other - 2, 10

And then wild cards based on fan voting. 5 team spots and 25 individual spots are on the line.

    2. Works for me. One last suggestion is to maybe make AA/A top 3 individuals? I know out in D7 Griffin Mackey and Ben Bumgarner didn't win district titles but took home state titles. They for sure need to be included.

    3. That's a great point. I gotta revisit that for D3 and D7 as these small school districts have much more depth than D1 historically (the school I started with). May open it up to either top 3 finishers or top 10-15 state finishers. I'll get back to you on this one before I release those districts.

  3. Where's CB East in the list of qualified teams? Didn't they qualify out of AAA last cross season?

    1. Yep, you're totally right. I missed them on the list by accident. They will definitely be included!
