The Etrain 11 Racing Series: WPIAL Qualifying

If you are in to imaginary all-time races, we've got another meet in the series coming to you on Monday night. The live results will show up on LXV+. The race starts Monday night (the 17th) at 8 o'clock. So you can expect mile standings maybe around 8:10, two mile standings around 8:20 and final standings about 8:30 depending on how meet organizers handle things.

If you missed the District One qualifying action, that can be found here and here. The results have retroactively been slightly revised to include Ryan Campbell, moving CR North into 3rd place. This did not affect any of the state qualifiers.

  1. It seems like this is a little biased towards the younger guys. Couple points I want to make:
    1) L.J Weatwood is way too low. Dude ran 15:50 at red, white, and blue, 2-time state champ in 800 and xc wpial champ his junior year. Quaker valley in general doesn't get enough love for how good they were on the AA for all those years
    2) TJ Hobart also way too low for the top caliber runner he was. I also think you are missing some good runners from Baldwin (Paul DeGregorio, 3200 WPIAL champ, comes to mind)

    1. I agree with your point on Westwood/Quaker Valley. Seeing this list reminded me of how many good runners they've had.

Overall I like the list. NA is absolutely insane, almost qualifying their Bteam. Not sure how you do the wild card voting stuff, but put me on record as saying Jake Susalla, Jeff van Kooten, Seneca Valley, and Mount Lebanon deserve spots.

    2. Here's what I will say, the races are based purely on XC performance with a focus on districts performance. For this experiment, I tried to ignore track times (that comes later). Certainly there is room for debate on a lot of this though. It's hard when you have to project the AA guys because that really gets speculatory. Plus 2009 and 2011 were such fast years it complicated things. Remember the race is held at Coopers so no one can run slower than they previously ran at Coopers.

  3. One of my former team mates was on the list, but the time you put was in between his personal best and his district time. I noticed this discrepancy for some of the NA guys including Robinson, Stupak, and Migliozzi and some others like Beveridge, Clouse and Mackey. Some runner were given times they they never ran, even on faster courses. How exactly did you get the times for this "meet"?

    1. So here's the basic formula that hopefully explains things.
      1) This race happens at Coopers Lake so the only times that really matter are those run on that course. In XC all courses are not created equal so overall PRs don't really factor in here unless they are on the Coopers course. If I missed someone's Coopers best, I apologize and will update for it. I tried to check every meet I could there.
      2) the most important finish for this race is from districts. State results are also considered but will be more relavent in the championship at Hershey
      3) at the end of the day it's a subjective conversation. It's like my top 50 lists, I consider all the results I can and then ultimate make a decision based on personal opinion. There will be disagreements all over the place, but that's part of the fun.
