They Ain't Got No Award For That: Brophys

The biggest surprise of the individual battles came in the final, most exciting race of the day. Jake Brophy dropped the hammer the final 500m, flew down hill, burst up hill and found himself flying to the finish line in a course record (just saying course record doesn't seem to so it justice honestly, he dropped that time into another dimension).

Brophy came into the year among the title hopefuls, but sitting behind some established names in the rankings. Molino, Abert and James had better resumes on the track and in XC. Jaxson Hoey was coming off a killer track season of his own. Hockenbury was a state champ in track with potential to repeat the feat in cross. There wasn't much room for Brophy (a top 10 runner in AAA and the top returner from the D1 championships) to get his talk.

But we were foolishly overlooking him. The sophomore to junior jump is significant, as exhibited by the massive difference in sophomore and junior state medalists and state XC titles. A junior has finished in one of the top 2 spots at states every year since 2011, over that span the top sophomore is Brent Kennedy at 7 (then Brophy at 8).

Plus Brophy was a special sophomore. As a freshman in a very talented year for PA, he broke 16 minutes in the 5k and came within a few seconds of medaling at states, a very rare achievement for a freshman (which admittedly sounds silly considering Spencer Smucker literally just did it, but trust me it's hard).

Then he was a top 10 runner in the state as a soph, another difficult achievement. That put him in a group with recent studs like Brent Kennedy (footlocker finalist, 2nd at states), Brad Miles (district, state and regional champ) and Vince McNally (Footlocker finalist with 15:02/9:05/4:07 PRs). So yeah, it was pretty elite company.

This past indoors I made a bold prediction: that Jake Brophy would win the indoor state title at 3000m. Considering Deluca, James and Martin's resume to that point, it was quite a statement to make about a sophomore. I was expecting a bit slower of a pace and when things got charged up, it wasn't in the cards for Brophy. However, he stuck his nose in it and kicked like a champ to find his way to third (and almost second) in a very impressive performance. Third in the 3k indoors was no joke and finishing just behind Deluca (ran about 9:03 outdoors) and just ahead of James (another 9:03) was a good sign.

Outdoors was setting up to be a fantastic battle in the 32. Russell, Wilson and Martin looked very strong and new guys were breaking 9:20 every week. Off the top of my head Russell, Wilson, Martin, McGoey, Barchet, Deluca, Webb, Kazanjian, Molino, Hockenbury, Marston, Comber, Stratman, Collins, Gebhart, Groh, James, Hoey, Dahl and Reilly all got under last spring. So 18 guys that I can remember. Gotta be some kind of record.

But Brophy wasn't among the guys to do it and so we didn't associate him with all the fancy PRs and the impressive numbers. But that wasn't really fair.

Outdoors, the CB East 4x8 was an up and coming squad. They qualified for the Penn Relays and so too did Jake Brophy in the 3k. The squad decided to give Jake a fresh shot at a big PR in the super competitive invitational 3k and they tried to advance to the championship of America without him.

It ended up being a tough day all around. The CBE 4x8 was in qualifying position through 3 legs, but their 4th just didn't have the gears to bring it home. Then Jake struggled in another absurdly fast race that night and ended up with a disappointing finish at the back of the field.

I won't pretend I know exactly what went into the decision, but I know this: after Penn Relays, Jake Brophy had sacrificed any individual hopes of a 3200m medal to try and help is brothers (some literal some metaphorical) compete for a state title in the 4x8.

And that is where Brophy, a guy likely best suited for the 2 mile/5k, learned to harness his speed. In the state finals, a string of 1:55-56 legs got the stick around to Jake in position to fight with the leaders: Penn Relays champs Henderson and state indoor champs State College.

Against 1:52 man Cather and 1:54 guy Thompson (with 1:54 guy Grace and a slew of 1:51-1:53 guys chasing) Brophy held his own and ran his own 1:55-1:56 type split to bring home a hard fought third for East. The team smashed their own school record in the process.

Maybe then is when we should have known this guy had the total package. He had the strength to be a title contender in a loaded 3k indoors. He had the speed to contend with the best 4x8 anchors in the state. And he had the heart to put aside individual numbers for a chance to do something special as a team.

At some point during this whole process, I imagine someone said something like, "Don't worry Jake, you are just a sophomore. You will have a few more chances at individual state gold."

Funny how some things work themselves out.

  1. Brophy wasn’t ignored in the predictions. I mean, Jarrett missed him, had him at 7th. But Etrain picked him 2nd so someone knew he had potential.

Most had him in their top 5. I had him 3rd, but I see what Jarrett/Etrain is getting at, I also overlooked him as a state champ candidate. Coming in I thought Abert’s Paul Short 14:55 was the best performance of the year. And with a 2nd place at states last year he obviously could handle the Hershey course and was clearly the favorite. I think most figured he’d take it out hard the other top guys would let him go, hoping he’d come back to the field on the hills. I also thought the second best performance of the year was James’ 15:22 course record at Delcos. Plus James has never been afraid to stick with the leaders in big races. So I envisioned a two man race, Albert taking it out hard and James following and as the two broke away, James taking the upset victory.

But that’s not at all what happened at all. Abert did take it out hard, but he had a lot of company not willing to just hand him the gold. A 6-pack (well, a pack of 6), including James and Brophy. Now I heard Brophy was quoted as saying something about not liking hills but I didn’t read much into that. 15:08 at SOLS, followed by 15:11 to win districts proved he was among the best. But I didn’t think he could beat Abert or James and I didn’t think any of them would take down Russell’s record, let alone obliterate it.

When I saw the first report on PA Don’t Play of Brophy in 15:24 I assumed it was a misprint or a troll. (Forrest does get trolls occasionally!). I’m still not sure what to make of that performance. Brophy put 14-24 seconds on the 5 talented and accomplished best-in-the-state runners who were with him at the 2 mile mark. I don’t even know what to compare it to. I guess the obvious is Russell who went 15:45 on Hershey as a junior. As a senior he improved his district winning time at Lehigh by 12 seconds so in theory he was better coming into Hershey last year. Then at states last year he hit two miles 1 second faster than Brophy did, but appeared to let off the throttle in the last 400 and cruise in for the win. I think we can assume with an all-out effort Russell could have been 15:33-15:35ish. And Brophy still killed that hypothetical mark.

Brophy just arrived as one of the best. But besides an absolute incredible performance, what does this result mean going forward? Will Brophy better Russell on the track? Can he go sub 8:30 in the indoor 3000? Sub 9:00 outdoors in the 3200? His 1:55 800 split as a soph shows some good speed. Can he be a big time miler? Probably yes to all but I’ll wait to predict as Etrain will no doubt continue to provide enough analysis from his in depth historical knowledge that will help us all make informed predictions….which Brophy just showed sometimes won’t be even be remotely close!

    2. Is Brophy running the WCH two mile? It'd be real interesting to see what he can do now.

  2. Jarrett will there be any mention or small preview for the henderson 2 mile next thursday? Should be a fast race before regionals

    1. If I can get my hands on some type of performance list or entry info it will definitely happen

    2. The performance list will probably be up the morning of the race because kevin kelly accepts entries until 9pm the night before. So I guess no preview. If you go to runccrs.com and go under race schedule it gives you a link to a sheet of information.

    3. I think DTW and definitely plenty of fast individuals will be there.

    4. I've also heard Stoga, GFS and maybe O'Hara? Any truth to this?

    5. Ohara has gone before, and I dont see why they wouldnt go again, not completely sure about gfs or stoga going, but unless you can find another competitive race to run between states and regionals, you would be a fool to not go. I would also imagine lots of chesmont guys will go bc it is close, but other than that all bets are off. It is also fun to run a 2 mile in the midst of a bunch of 5k's. Plus they usually do a really good job of running the meet and moving it along fast.

Jarrett, you could also email kevin kelly, explain to him who you are (email listed under meet info) and ask to see what he has so far for a perf list, if you put it up on your blog, im sure it would create popularity about it if there were some good names on the list. Its a win win, you get info for a preview and kelly gets more runners and cash.

    6. ^ Cash? Really? The entry fee is $5 bucks.

    7. Oh i thought it was $10 haha, still its a decent amount if you get 50+ runners.

    8. I agree, Jarrett, its a win for both of you. Although if you were to email Kelly, I would wait a bit longer for more entries if he were to send you the list.

    9. Although entries, the following teams have told me that they're coming to the meet-Malvern, GFS, Conestoga, DTW. Kevin James said that they were coming, but I haven't heard from Coach Kennedy. Hopefully, a bunch of other top guys will show up. I'll send a preliminary entry list on Monday. It worked out great 2 years ago when it was just O'Hara, GFS and us. Weather looks similar to that day. Some open guys will run also as it's a post-season event so it's open to everyone. It should be fun.
