State Predictions

I'm writing out all the names of the squads selected in the below state championship predictions post. Feel free to continue to make predictions until 3/1 at hits at 12:00 AM, then I will ask that we close the predictions. I will be out all day at the Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow so feel free to use this post's comment sections to give updates on the State Meet for those who can not be there. Just remember to keep all comments civil because I will not be checking.

So anyway, here are the summarized predictions. If I missed someone or messed up the names let me know!

PS I'm sorry I didn't make this clear initially, but if you select "Other" for the mile or 800m please give me a specific name. So unless those who picked "Other" choose a specific name to go along with it, I can't count the pick in the interest of fairness. If you have questions let me know.

Also it is my understanding that mile information on Penntrack was incorrect and that Liam Galligan should have been entered in the mile in Paul Power's spot. So if you picked Power in the mile, you may want to consider changing it (or you can leave it as a high upside pick).

RJJL back at it again! His score of 40 was #1 in the contest!

  2. Tom Coyle '13 sophomore at Stanford ran 3:59.32 today to become the 2nd #LSCHSAlumni to break the 4:00 mile!

  3. Of course RJJL won. Anyone read his predictions on the thread below? He called the mile and 800 almost exactly. Not bad on the 4x800 and DMR either. He knows his business and accurately didn't pick his own guys. Loyalty is one thing but a fake Etrain buck is another!

    1. We all know who he really is and he wouldn't overestimate his guys.

  4. Recaps will be coming in starting tomorrow, so glad that we had so many participants in this year's predictions! It was fantastic to see everyone contributing! Big congrats to RJJL, hopefully we can find a way to get his insights more frequently around these parts!

in the mean time, I'd love to hear splits from anyone who has it, if anyone is there can give a brief recap or video of the races played out and I will be working on some interviews for next week

any of the state medalists individually or on relays if you are interested in doing some interviews let me know through the normal means (email at jarrettfelix1130@gmail.com). Hopefully we can put some cool stuff together

    2. For the 3k, Hock, Gebhart, Tidball, Comber and Mcgoey broke off after 400 meters and no one other than those 5 were ever in the picture again. Mcgoey and Comber fell off going into the secongd mile, and the pack was Hock, Gebhart, and Tidball. Going to the end of 2nd mile, Mcgoey had clawed his way up back alongside the pack. Going into the last mile Hock pulled away and only Mcgoey went with him. Mcgoey sat on him for the last mile, and Hock led all the way up until the final stretch where Mcgoey just turned it on and used some speed to pass Hock with 50 meters left. Right before they finished, Comber appears at the back end of the picture (absolutely no idea when and how he made up all that ground). At the end, Comber ran out of real estate to catch up, and Mcgoey left Hock stunned after having it seem he was going to win while leading it coast to coast. In the end, it was Mcgoey, Hock, and Comber in that order in 8:35, 36, and 37. Gebhart and Tidball hung in for 4th and 5th in the low 8:40's. My personal favorite race of the day.

  5. My quick takeaways from the meet:

Mile – Ritz just absolutely destroyed this race and looked smooth doing it. I’d bet if fighting down the stretch he’s got maybe another 2 or 3 seconds in him. 4:09.56 and in control, there was no chance he was being upset today. If he stays healthy and is in the right races I believe he’s got a legit shot at Vandergrift. So many things have to fall into place but this guy is just an incredible talent. Also breaking the state meet record without getting the gold (yet again) was James with a very impressive 4:12.57. Déjà vu, right? He’s had such a great HS career and probably been closest to state gold so many times without getting it, than anyone maybe in state history. Oh well, tough always being a bridesmaid, right?….. Also congrats to Webb and McDevitt on huge pr’s.

800 – Lewis, 3 golds (I think). Last year I remember being incredibly impressed with how Francis just took charge from the gun and never let up, one of the most aggressive races I’d ever seen on the States scene. Well Lewis just effectively matched it. He went out hard and never looked back. It was practically the exact same race, only 2 hundredths difference. Incredible. Graca made a great effort to keep up and even though he never really challenged, he wasn’t exactly chopped liver with a huge 1:50.86 pr. Ritz fresh would have been interesting, but he even coming off of his big mile he was pulled along to a 1:51.79 pr, which would have won it most years.

3000 – I had no clue how this race would go down. Hockenbury did everything he could to win it but as happens often with a talented field, there’s always someone hanging around who finds another gear late and this year is was McGoey. It was a very good race and a great finish. Nice job by Powers to pick up 7th and the 2 points I needed!

4x800 – Pennsbury. This race was closer than I thought it would be at times but in the end the Pennsbury boys prevailed with Sauer on a strong double for the day.

DMR – So I had Stoga for the win and they ran very well with Marston throwing down the huge final lap to pass two guys and get the points I need in the Etrain contest! Thank you Stoga boys!

Unfortunately for Stoga though I went back to my old ways and underestimated O’hara. What a big win for that team and for James on the anchor. I don’t know the splits but I’m sure Morro, Toraborrelli and Nolen all exceeded the splits I thought they could do and set up their anchor with a great chance. When James got the baton only 3 or so seconds back, I suspected it might be over for Stoga. But then James made up the ground immediately, out in 58 I heard for the 1st qtr, I thought maybe that’s too aggressive. It wasn’t. He surged into the lead and cruised. I saw him look over his shoulder a few times but he didn’t look worried, just checking things out. I heard 4:15 but I’m pretty sure he could have done whatever it took to close that deal.

Now just off the top of my head I’m thinking of James close calls at state gold. 2012 XC team gets beat on a tie breaker. Unbelievably, 2013 XC team gets beat again on a tiebreaker. He sets the XC course record in 2014, except there’s one guy having a better day! Runs a 4:12 mile today, breaks the meet record, except again there’s one guy having a better day! Runs on the 2014 national champion 10:00.0 DMR but things didn’t line up for them to run that event at 2014 States. Has a 4:12 mile PR, and 9:03 3200 PR. Yet no state gold! Now I could be overreacting here, the guy has incredible accomplishments and maybe the whole state gold thing is overrated. But judging from his reaction as he hit that DMR line today, he looked like an elated man who had reached a big time goal! No more bridesmaid, James has his state gold! I personally didn’t think he’d pull it off today knowing what kind of effort would be needed in that open mile. A 4:12/4:15 double is just fantastic so kudos to James and OH for their big win today.

    1. Nice recap. It was a huge win for OH. It's incredible they haven't won something at states with the teams they've had over the last few years. That just shows how competitive PA is.
