2018 Indoor State Championship Preview: DMR

DMR
The Stage
In one of the biggest surprises of the championship, Seneca Valley pulled out of both the individuals and the 4x8 in order to put all their focus into the DMR. The reigning WPIAL champs in XC are hoping to become the first western team in state history to win the DMR (after Carlisle was the first mid-state team to win last year). Based on my records, a WPIAL team has never won either the 4x8 or the DMR on the boy’s side at indoor states which means this could be a truly historic achievement for this squad. Standing in their way is a familiar name in Bishop Shanahan, a 4x8 power in CB West and a two time DMR champ in LaSalle.

The Field
Germantown Friend’s 10:45.91
CB East 10:45.02
CR North 10:41.53
Neshaminy 10:40.25
Spring Ford 10:40.14
Penncrest 10:39.94
Wyomissing 10:38.07
LaSalle 10:36.50
Butler 10:33.94
CB West 10:29.22
Bishop Shanahan 10:24.64
Seneca Valley 10:23.07

As mentioned, Seneca Valley is pushing all their chips into the pot on the DMR and I am really excited about the decision. The team ran a 10:23 in a mid-season trip to the armory and, although they haven’t raced the event since, has clocked big times individually and in the 4x8. Sam Owori and Seth Ketler are set up to be two strong pieces on the end legs and the Dixon-Bellack combo is not going to lose ground to many. This team looks great on paper and has been good in practice as this quarter ran 7:46 in the 4x8 last spring with two sophomores leading the charge.

Shanahan, at full strength, would be the team to beat. Despite SV’s great roster, Shanahan is somehow better. A Hoey-Zink-Yoquinto-Hoey relay would be blazing fast across the board. But will we see that relay? With Josh entered in both the mile and the 800 and the team qualifying a 4x4 last minute, I think we will see a modified squad like featuring Carlos Shultz. Shanahan was still a sub 11 team at Meet of Champs with the aforementioned modified relay so they are still dangerous, but I don’t see them as title contenders at this stage.

I think Seneca Valley’s biggest competition will come from CB West, LaSalle and Wyomissing. CB West skipped the individual events to attack this race. For me, I’m curious what West’s relay order is going to be. I’m assuming Baker is the mile, but I don’t know who is going to run that 1200 leg. That is where the race will likely be won or lost for this squad (unless they throw Baker on the 12 and give Bunch the anchor with fresh legs-they could pull a 2016 O’Hara type move and breakaway in the early stages). LaSalle may have the best anchor in this field as Evan Addison has 1:54 speed combined with 4:17 strength. They’ve got a nice #2 piece in Twomey (who should be fresh) and a 2 flat x-factor in Boyle.

But I really like this Wyomissing squad. They ran 10:38 last week with essentially no competition. Joe Cullen is a star with 1:53/4:13 ability. I don’t know if he will be on the 12 on the anchor, but either way he can do a lot of damage. Sophomore Ben Kuhn will have some pressure on him, but he’s risen to the occasion before for the W. Remember, these guys won a state championship in a complete team effort during the fall. They’ve scratched all individual events to chase another one this weekend and they may shock the world in the process.

It’s amazing that I still haven’t talked about Butler. Seneca Valley has overshadowed them in the WPIAL, but they have a comparable 1-2 punch in Brady and Beveridge. Noah has scratched the 3k specifically for this DMR relay and that sort of good karma can go a long way (I think of Kevin James in 2015-a second O’Hara reference for you). Both he and Brady will be on the double which could complicate the picture, but they just ran their own solo sub 10:40 DMR and they shouldn’t be counted out.

Penncrest, CR North and Spring Ford are also all in on this DMR. Penncrest won the Meet of Champs, clinching their spot. They remind me a lot of Lower Merion’s medal winning squad a year ago and Avery Lederer (who scratched multiple individual events to focus on this relay) is a reliable anchor piece. CRN hasn’t dropped a fire DMR since the Lavino Relays so they’ve been playing their cards pretty close to the vest. They have 3 XC state medalists on this squad plus a guy who has split 47 on a DMR before in Welde. Spring Ford’s last state championship featured a 4th place finish so they are no stranger to rising to the moment. McKenna is great, but Zach Smith is the x-factor. He’s had a terrific season to date and can really swing this race with a big leg (I assume he’s the 12 but they may use him at 800).

In a fresh scenario, Neshaminy has the best anchor in this field-Rusty Kujdych. However, Rusty is doubling off the 3k which is a tough ask for any runner. However, if anyone can pull it off, I suppose it may be Kujdych who has been seemingly invincible thus far in 2017-2018. Can his teammates keep it close enough for Rusty to work his magic over the final 8 laps?

CB East and GFS are the last two teams in the field. CB East has a really interesting squad. I’d love to see Endres on a 12 and Bardwell on an anchor. I think that line up (assuming Endres has the stamina to double/triple) could be really effective. GFS has a championship pedigree in this event as one of the most consistent medal contenders we’ve seen. This is perhaps their biggest long shot for a medal we’ve seen during the last decade, but they still return a crew that knows how to win a national championship in this 4,000 meter race. Don’t sleep on the 12 seed.

Predictions
Seneca Valley is certainly the easy pick as they are fresh, focused and the #1 seed. However, I think this race has the potential for madness. To me, it really comes down to the order. I’m interested to see who is anchor for CB West and Wyomissing. I want to see what strategy each team is going to use to try and either break the field or make up ground in the second half of the race. I think you can make a good case for any of the 12 teams to place top 3.

I would bet a substantial amount of money that these predictions will be least accurate of all my predictions. But I’ll make them anyway.

1. Seneca Valley 10:24.70
2. CB West 10:28.03
3. Wyomissing 10:28.85
4. Butler 10:29.41
5. LaSalle 10:29.57
6. CR North 10:31.52
7. Spring Ford 10:32.64
8. Penncrest 10:34.18

  1. Butler could go low, 10:22 and that could win it all.

  4. I agree that CB West are the favorites for this event, but I think we may see a Shanahan team with Jonah on it give them a run for their money. The Pennsbury scratch was a very interesting decision. I think the top 8 seeds are the best 8 teams in the field if they decide to go after it. That being said, I think a team from the 2nd heat can probably snag at least one medal. I’m going to take Boyertown.
    1. CB West 7:53
    2. Shanahan 7:54
    3. Ephrata 7:56
    4. Pennridge 7:57
    5. Abington 8:03
    6. CR South 8:03
    7. Boyertown 8:05
    8. GFS 8:05

I see Conway pushing Josh hard in this event from the beginning. I predict Conway, Hoey and Beveridge will break away from the pack with 600 or so to go. Hoey will take the win after a blazing last lap. I don’t know who’s going to lead the second heat, but I feel like it will go out fast. It’s going to have to if they want a medal, so I think someone will do it.
    1. Hoey 4:10
    2. Conway 4:11
    3. Addison 4:15
    4. Beveridge 4:16
    5. Wirth 4:18
    6. Brady 4:22
    7. Brown 4:23
    8. Lindgren 4:25

With the top 2 seeds tired out from the mile, I think we see something pretty unexpected here. I predict the fast heat will go out on the slower side. Jihad will go ahead at the halfway point and lead lap 3 with Josh sitting right on him. Josh passes on the far straight to take the win. But was it fast enough? Just barely.
    1. Josh Hoey 1:54
    2. Sauer 1:54
    3. Jihad 1:55
    4. Eissler 1:55
    5. Ebling 1:56
    6. Dhillon 1:56
    7. Phillips 1:56
    8. Jonah Hoey 1:56

I don’t see Rusty as a big favorite for this event. I think Forsythe has a decent shot at beating him. His 9:15 at SPIRE was very impressive. This could turn out to be a great battle. I doubt guys like Brendan Miller and Etter are going to be willing to let Rusty start off slow. I see the pace being pretty honest throughout.
    1. Kujdych 8:31
    2. Forsythe 8:32
    3. Etter 8:39
    4. Smucker 8:42
    5. B. Miller 8:43
    6. McGoey 8:45
    7. Rollins 8:48
    8. Macknair 8:50

In the last meet of the day, I think we see Seneca Valley shooting for the record. That’s the only reason I can think of for them keeping everyone fresh. I see Bishop Shanahan going with the Jonah-Schultz DMR and not being able to compete with them. The next three highest seeds will all have tired legs. I think Seneca Valley wins big. I really have no idea who will end up in 2nd through 8th.
    1. Seneca Valley 10:18
    2. CR North 10:26
    3. CB West 10:29
    4. Butler 10:32
    5. LaSalle 10:33
    6. Wyomissing 10:34
    7. Penncrest 10:36
    8. Spring Ford 10:36

  5. The flotrack coverage is horrible, the announcers can't be heard. Plus the live results don't work. Just awful for any big meet, let alone a state championship.

  6. i love hoey's move to go up to Boston for this open 800. i understand ppl (probably) will rag him or his parents for not being team players but this kid just smoked a 1:47.67 for a US HS indoor record that is well ahead of Olympian and multi-time 800m NCAA champion Tobby Andrews record of 1:49.21. all time outdoor record is 1:46.45 :)

    1. Liam Conway owes him a BIG thank you.

    2. Did the Shanahan team win states today without him?

    3. Nah, not even really all that close.

    4. Shannahan scores 17.50 without him -- if he wins the mile and 800 they earn an extra 20 points and win over Saint Joseph's by .5 points (37.50 to 37). but do teams really care about indoor state titles? i personally was at a school where only XC team stuff and dual meets in outdoor mattered (in regards to the team). but perhaps it is different at other places.

end of the day, im happy for Hoey and Conway!!

Also DMR was awesome this year! i agree with the comment or below about Springford!! i thought they were far more distance oriented and we wouldn't see much from them after XC but they came to play!! best race of the day imo but the 800 is close :) great stuff
also LaSalle with an 8:05 relay with 4 legs ive never heard of. really impressed with the depth of this squad!
Lastly, Seneca Valley at nationals or Penn Relays sub 10:14 is my bet!

    5. In my day the team title always came first but times have changed. The Affolders were old school that way last year. They knew they were only with Carlisle a year and still went all out for the team title XC, Indoor and Outdoor.

    6. My only question about Hoey running at Boston is why didn't he scratch so two other runners could have participated in States in his place? Josh might not care about running at states but for most runners that is the highlight of the year even if the runners know they won't win.

    7. absolutely with this comment ^ the issue of scratching at indoor states was a real mess this year and hoey's scratches are disrespectful on this level

  7. Biggest surprises of the day:
Springford DMR, wow. 10:23 is really something. I'd love to figure out the splits of those legs, because that was big time running from those guys. Not a surprise, but congrats to Liam Conway. This kid, for some unknown reason, continuously gets slept on, and just continues to thrive. Tyler Shue has a bright bright future. 1:54 split on the 4x8 followed up by a 1:53 in the open 800. That was just incredible for a sophomore. I don't even know if Josh could've quite done that as a sophomore indoor. Speaking of Hoy's lets talk about that 800. Jonah ran 1:56.01 and didn't even get a medal. I think because there wasn't a lot of firepower up front this year in the 800, people kind of overlooked it, but man this thing was deep. at 1:55.37, it was the fastest cutoff for a medal since 2015, back when Ritz and Lewis were leading the charge. If I'm correct, 5 outta the 8 won their first ever state medals too. The 800 landscape was kind of rebuilding at the top, and its cool to see the newer names emerging.

  8. While he may have shattered the national record, he probably ended up costing his team a state title on the day. Jury’s still out on which one is better, but I bet his teammates are not happy in the slightest.

  9. Seneca Valley came thru at 10:21:72 - Owari kept the pace strong and lead after first leg, Bellack kept Seneca in it for the 400 leg, ultimately it was the legs of Dixon and Ketler to secure the win. Dixon coming in on the 800 with a strong 1:57:00 giving the baton to Ketler only steps behind Bishop Shananhan. Ketler brought all home with a thrilling finish.

  10. After this weekend, PA has the following numbers in terms of national ranks...
    -800: 5 in the top 20
-Mile: 5 in the top 20 (if you count Hengst)
    -3000: 3 in the top 20 (that doesn't include 3200/2 mile conversions)
-4x8: 6 in the top 20 (we've always been the best state for producing 4x8s)
-DMR: 4 in the top 20

Out of the 5 events and 100 total places, PA makes up 23% of those with two weeks left until Nats. Solid work Pa...

    2. Don't forget Kratz in the 200m, Owens who is US #2 in the hurdles, and Garland and Owens in the multis. And remember Thomas Burns who transferred to Pine Richland. He had the #2 300m hurdle mark, all time. Between Garland, Owens, and Burns, PA is the top hurdle state.
